SILENT ROTATION

Available in the U.K. under the Samyang name and Rokinon in the U.S., three affordable and fast-aperture Video Digital SLR (VDSLR) lenses are available for Canon, Nikon and Sony Alpha DSLR mounts. All three manual-focus lenses sport follow-focus gearing, as well as a "De-clicked" decoupled aperture to quietly make changes to focus and aperture while filming. The 35mm T1.5 AS UMC VDSLR prime lens includes eight-aperture blades for smooth bokeh and 12 lens elements in 10 groups. It’s sized for full-frame cameras but is also compatible with sub-full-frame sensors with approximately a 50mm equivalence on APS-C. An Aspherical optical element and UMC multi-layer coatings reduce aberrance. With 13 lens elements in 12 groups, the wider 24mm T1.5 ED AS UMC VDSLR prime translates to an approximate 38mm lens on APS-C sensors like the Canon EOS 7D. Lens construction includes four low-dispersion glass (ED) and two aspheric elements with Ultra Multi Coated (UMC) lenses for reducing ghosting and flare. The extremely wide 14mm T3.1 ED AS IF UMC VDSLR lens is 35mm equivalent to a still-wide 22mm focal length with a field of view of 114º on full-frame sensors, 93.9˚ on Nikon APS-C with a 1.5x crop factor, or 89.9˚ with Canon EOS APS-C and its 1.6x crop. Both the 35mm and 24mm lenses also feature a 77mm front filter diameter, while the 14mm includes a built-in petal-style lens hood that reduces flare and blocks ambient light from the rear of the lens. DIRECTOR’S CUT

Offered as a versatile handheld monitor for directors and other viewers, the seven-inch ikan MR7 field monitor with 1024×600 resolution and a high brightness of 400-NIT (cd/m2) offers portable monitoring and playback with a wide 170º viewing angle and a large 800:1 contrast ratio. Built-in QuickTime H.264 recording will produce 1280×720 versions of video files for proxy editing and web uploads. There’s 4 GB of internal capacity built in, with 32 GB of available storage when capturing to the SD card port. Support for the latest 2048×1080 2K resolution is supplied through the 3G SDI input. A 1:1 Pixel-to-Pixel mode will display a quarter of the frame in up to 2K resolution for reviewing at the pixel level. The display features waveform for checking brightness, False Color with color indicators, DSLR Scaling, a daytime brightness mode and vectorscope for comparing skin tone, tint and hue, as well as RGB Parade values for red, green and blue channels. The UV Meter monitors up to 16 channels of audio, and there’s a headphone input. Other features include Color Peaking for checking focus, Video Range Check and Clip Guide for watching over- and underexposure, Auto Flip of the picture when holding upside-down and Internal Patterns for calibrations. GREENSCREEN

The CycLight from FloLight presents a single-fixture LED light for an even spread of illumination along greenscreen panels. The "Light Wave" technology employs three 40-watt green LEDs to progressively increase the light toward the top areas while limiting light output near the bottom. The result is an evenly lit background without the need for tweaking multiple lights to achieve a homogenous spread of light. The unique bottom-up light pattern also limits bounceback light from the greenscreen on talent. The 270x200x200mm CycLight will evenly light 2×3-meter greenscreens and multiple units can be used for larger screens. G-Technology‘s new line of USB 3.0 external storage solutions offers several models for achieving blazing-fast transfer rates and compatibility with Apple’s latest computers. Backwards-compatible with USB 2.0, USB 3.0 drives deliver speeds of up to 10 times faster than the previous format and up to six times the speed of FireWire 800. Sony Creative Software is now offering royalty-free music tracks for personal and commercial edits through an online library service called Production Music. The collection of more than 1,600 tracks includes four different clips with each track purchase: 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds and full length. Content can be used across multiple projects. Suggestive subheaders include Genre, Tempo, Suggested Use, Mood Feel and Instrumentation for narrowing down your choices, and the searchable catalog can be browsed with audition track previews prior to purchase. AUTOMATIC AUDIO

Singular Software has updated the single-click sync video and audio automation workflow of the PluralEyes software series for multi-camera, multi-take and dual-system audio productions. With a new interactive workspace that will visually display the progress of the syncing process and media clip locations as it works, the more efficiently designed program incorporates preparation and review of data directly from within the PluralEyes workflow rather than the NLE. It syncs without timecode or clappers. The Mac plug-in is compatible with Final Cut Pro, Media Composer and Premiere Pro, and there’s currently a free 30-day trial download.
