M IS FOR MONOCHROME

Announced as a dedicated black-and-white version of the EPIC cinema camera, the RED EPIC-M features a newly developed 14-megapixel, 5120×2700 Mysterium-X Monochrome sensor with a native ASA of 2000. The camera "Brain" captures only in black-and-white, which circumvents deBayering processes and leads to heightened resolution, extended dynamic range (13.5 stops with up to 18 stops when using HDRx), greater light sensitivity and better tonal transfer in gradients. Offering 5K RAW in full frame, 2:1, 2.4:1 and Anamorphic 2:1 aspects, the sensor also captures 4.5K RAW in 2.4:1, 4K RAW in 16:9, HD, 2:1 and Anamorphic 2:1, 3K RAW in 16:9, 2:1 and Anamorphic 2:1, 2K RAW in 16:9, 2:1 and Anamorphic 2:1, 1080p RGB in 16:9 and 720p RGB in 16:9. Frame rates in all resolutions include 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 47.96, 48, 50 and 59.94 fps. ENTRY-LEVEL CINEMA EOS

For filmmakers on a budget, the Canon Cinema EOS C100 camcorder packages the advantages of large-sensor systems in an efficient, cost-effective solution. At approximately 85% the size of the EOS C300 model, the C100 offers a push auto iris function, one-shot autofocus, manual focus and exposure control, a multi-angle 3.5-inch LCD panel, a high-resolution EVF, built-in ND filters and a locking, clean-out HDMI output. The camera includes Wide Dynamic Range Gamma and Canon Log Gamma for extended picture control in post. Much larger than typical camcorder sensors, the Super 35mm 16:9 CMOS sensor captures individual RGB channels for each 1920×1080 frame and offers a light-sensitive ISO range of 320 to 20,000. For capture of the 24 Mb/s AVCHD files with 4:2:0 MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression, the C100 includes dual SD card slots for redundancy and extended capture. The modular core configuration allows the addition of accessory parts, including a removable side-mounted rotating grip with start/stop button and miniature joystick menu control with traditional SLR-like operation. A detachable handle unit includes dual XLR connectors, a built-in stereo mic, a bracket for an external mic, audio-input adjustment and a tally light. BLACKMAGIC CINEMA CAMERA MFT

The Blackmagic Cinema Camera MFT sports the same features and advantages of the Cinema Camera EF for Canon EF and Zeiss ZE lenses only with a passive Micro Four Thirds mount that makes it compatible with manually operated Micro Four Thirds lenses and third-party lens-mount adapters for PL-mount cinema lenses. Like the Cinema Camera EF, the camera features a high-resolution 2.5K sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range, a built-in SSD recorder, unprocessed 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW video capture, Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD compressed formats and a touch-screen LCD monitor. The camera purchase also includes the professional DaVinci Resolve color-grading program, UltraScope monitoring software and metadata that can be dialed in right from the camera menus. FULL-FRAME HANDYCAM

With an interchangeable-lens mount and a massive full-frame, 24.3-megapixel 35mm (35.8×23.9mm) Exmor HD CMOS sensor, the aggressively priced Sony NEX-VG900 offers large-sensor depth of field and an extended selection of removable lenses. With 1080 in 24p, 60p and 60i frame rates, the camera is also capable of 14-bit RAW and JPEG still image capture. The VG900 automatically formats the sensor to the correct aspect when using APS-C E-mount NEX lenses, and the included LA-EA3 adapter opens up the VG900 to A-mount lenses like the Sony Alpha line, including full-frame lenses with no crop equivalence. The camera includes uncompressed HDMI output, a Quad Capsule Spatial Array Surround microphone with 5.1 channels and a Tru-Finder OLED electronic viewfinder with 2,359K resolution for detailed footage previews. The Multi Interface Shoe also allows the optional XLR-K1M adapter with mono shotgun mic and two XLR connections for even more audio options. HELMET CAM

Featuring 1080p at 30/25 fps, 1280×960 at 30/25 fps, 720p at 60/50 or 30/25 fps and now slow-motion video at 854×480 resolution with 120/100, 60/50 or 30/25 fps frame rates, the Contour+2 improves on the original Contour+ and ContourROAM designs while ringing in at $100 less in asking price. The Contour+2 weighs less than six ounces, and a built-in GPS receiver enables you to track speed, elevation and distance while geotagging your footage. The ConnectView card and Viewfinder app use Bluetooth technology to turn smartphones into a viewfinder and remote control for the camera. Batteries last up to 2.5 hours, and the unit incorporates a photo mode for capturing 5-megapixel shots in intervals that can be set between one and 60 seconds. Also included is a 4 GB microSD memory card (with support up to 32 GB), an Instant On-Record switch and a Record Lock Switch for manual recording. COMPACT PRIMES

Joining the family of Compact Prime CP.2 lenses from Carl Zeiss, the CP.2 25/T2.1 lens replaces its predecessor, the 25/T2.9, with a much faster maximum aperture and further minimized chromatic aberration. Ranging in focal lengths from 25-135mm, eight lenses of the 14-lens set now sport a fast T/2.1 aperture, which translates to consistent depth of field and fewer light changes on set. The fixed-focal-length primes in the CP.2 family cover a range of 15mm to 135mm. They include an interchangeable mount for PL, EF, F, MFT and E lens mounts for compatibility with a wide variety of cameras up to full-frame sensors thanks to the 36x24mm image circle. Standard focus rotation is 300º, and all Compact Prime CP.2 lenses are housed in a standard cine-style body for compatibility with follow-focus units. Announced concurrently, the Compact Zoom CZ.2 28-80/T2.9 cine zoom lens offers a full-frame-format lens solution capable of resolving all the way to 4K. It’s the second Compact Zoom CZ.2 lens, complementing the CZ.2 70-200/T2.9 zoom with consistent optical performance.
