Adding PL-compatibility, Rokinon also makes the much more expensive XEEN line of cinema lenses at $2,995 list each. With full frame coverage for PL, Canon, Nikon, Micro Four Thirds and Sony E mounts, the primes have common 114mm front-thread as well as matched focus and iris gearing across the line even down to the 14mm wide-angle. (One XEEN focal length, the 16mm T2.6 is APS-C/Super35 rather than full frame). Conversely, the incredibly affordable Cine DS line of primes share many of the same features as the top-of-the-line XEEN models, like geared focus and aperture rings, declicked aperture and internal focusing, while some of them excel in certain aspects, like minimum focusing distance. (At a similar price point of just under three-thousand-dollars each, Sigma has announced a similar range of cinema lenses, also with matching barrels and gearing for fast-swapping of lenses and follow focus systems. Lots more on those systems, including interviews with Sigma’s lens designer, can be found here.)I picked up the manual focus Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine DS at a bargain sale price of only $250, which has turned into one of my favorite lenses to use for portraiture when doing photography. Currently streeting at $299, the declicked aperture on the 85mm T1.5 gives me a lot of smooth control over aperture for video, and even though the 85mm T1.5 Cine DS has an eight-blade aperture while the corresponding prime in the XEEN line has 11-blades, background and bokeh is generally very smooth and pleasing.
Except for a few unique Rokinon models, none of these lenses have automatic focus or zoom servos, which is one of the ways in which Rokinon is able to produce so many models at such affordable pricing. For even more affordable options for DSLR and mirrorless users, Rokinon’s line of Digital Photo lenses are available for a litany of APS-C and full-frame cameras, including Micro Four Thirds, Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Pentax, Samsung and Sony as well as multiple mounts in each manufacturer’s camera lines, like Canon EF, Canon AE and Canon M, for example. The primes in the Digital Photo series start as wide as the 7.5mm F3.5 culminating on the telephoto end with the 300mm F6.3.
This last year, Rokinon has also announced the full frame XEEN 135mm T2.2 prime lens for Canon EF, Nikon F, PL mount, Micro Four Thirds MFT and Sony E-mount as well as the Rokinon 14mm T3.1 And 35mm T1.5 in Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E, Micro Four Thirds and PL. Even more confusingly, Rokinon is backed by Korean manufacturer Samyang, who also offers a number of similar focal lengths in their own lines of APS-C and full-frame-DSLR lenses. If anyone is interested in a comparison, pipe up in the comments below and I’ll see if I can get comparison models to post sample shots.
