Gear — Tiffen Variable Viewing Filter

Tiffen's "VV" Variable Viewing Filter with 2 to 8 stops of filtration

Made from Water White glass, Tiffen’s latest VVF Variable Viewing Filter is not actually a filter, but instead it is a device for previewing filtration on a scene without needing to change camera setups. With a Variable ND of 2 to 8 stops, the 49mm ring filter also allows the attachment of other filters to see the additive effects of UV, polarizers, diffusion and FX filters. At roughly $185, the Tiffen VVF Variable Viewing Filter is available in the UK via ARRI Rental or Panavision’s Panastore, with additional locations worldwide listed in the press release below.

“The VVF is the latest addition to Tiffen’s Viewing Filter range,” explains the press release, “designed to handicap the eye, with its much greater range of apparent densities, to resemble the range of the various types of situation. These contrast viewing filters can be used to judge relative highlight and shadow densities.” There is a 1” handle with quick-release lanyard so that it’s always handy, particularly useful for changing light conditions under moving light cover. Tiffen Variable Filter PRESS RELEASE

Pinewood Studios, London UK; 14th November 2016:

Responding to the demands of cinematographers & lighting professionals worldwide, Tiffen has launched its new Variable Viewing Filter (VVF), incorporating Tiffen’s award-winning Variable ND filter, offering indexed 2-8 stops and with the unique ability to easily add any 49mm ring filter from their vast range.

The VVF allows the user to add additional Neutral Density filters to increase the stop range, UV Filters and Polarizers, or even special FX and diffusion filters for pre-visualization of a scene without the need to reposition the camera.

This is a great tool for Gaffers and Directors of Photography to spot strong lights or keep track of the sun moving in and out of cloud cover when used with additional ND or UV Filters.

The filter is manufactured to Tiffen’s high specification and features a classic eyecup and a 1” inch handle with a quick release lanyard.

Early orders have been shipped already to ARRI Rental and Panavision and are available immediately from stock.

Balancing lighting by eye is a matter of experience. Decisions can be aided through the use of contrast viewing filters. The VVF is the latest addition to Tiffen’s Viewing Filter range, designed to handicap the eye, with its much greater range of apparent densities, to resemble the range of the various types of situation. These contrast viewing filters can be used to judge relative highlight and shadow densities.

Tiffen’s Filter expert Eren Ibrahim is at Camerimage Film Festival in Poland 12-19th November with the new VVF as well as other filters from the Tiffen range.
