CineGear Blog: Zeiss Unleashes 13 “Supreme” High-Speed Prime Cine Lenses

Zeiss has been integral to the history of cinematography, long before digital capture was the dominant production method for motion pictures and video work.

At CineGear this year, the company have announced a mind-blowing 13-lens series they’re dubbing “Supreme” that encompass a wide range of focal lengths, and which feature super-fast apertures. The company says the lenses have a certain “look” thanks to “gentle sharpness.” Creating a lens with a neutral look is something Zeiss has mentioned before—in 2017 when we attended the company’s launch of the CP.3 lineup, they talked about the need to match footage between cameras and lenses, and how providing a baseline for post-production could speed up the workflow.

The lenses will range from 15mm to 200mm, and will all feature a maximum aperture of T1.5. All of the lenses are designed for the latest full-frame cine gear including the Sony VENICE, ARRI Alexa LF and RED Monster.

Like those CP.3 lenses, Zeiss has included the “Zeiss eXtended Data” functionality into the new Supreme lenses, which allows post production to remove vignetting and other lens artifacts by recoding lens configuration data on a frame-by-frame level. Post production editors can create one neutral look across all of the lenses used in production, or can use the metadata to add in effects-based looks across ranges of footages.

The majority of the lenses will use the same 95mm diameter, and the focus and aperture ring positioning has been standardized across the range of lenses, for focus and aperture pulling on different lenses without having to change out the rigs.

The new Supreme Prime lenses will be available in 25,29,35,59 and 85mm beginning in August of 2018. The company plans to release the 100mm lens in December 2018, and the final lenses will be released “successively” through 2020. This graphic from the company’s website indicates that the 135mm and 150mm lenses will arrive in 2019, and the 200mm in 2020.

The first set of six lenses (the 25-85mm mentioned above, plus the upcoming 100mm) are available in a set from Zeiss cine dealers for $108,000.
