There isn’t too much detail as of right now, but George Lucas has decided to continue his unabated lust for making ever more oodles of cash by announcing that the Star Wars series will indeed be released in theaters in, you guessed it, 3D. Sadly, he’s going to be releasing the features in (non) chronological order, starting with a 2012 theatrical release of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace and followed annually by each of the remaining films. Happily, fanboys rejoice, John Knoll, visual effects supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic, is overseeing the project. So with the exception of Jar Jar Binks, it’s going to look really, REALLY good. See an interview with Knoll at the Star Wars blog about the conversion process here. Money quote: “Really getting good results from a stereo conversion means a lot of attention to detail and taking the time to get it right, and we’re going to take the time to get it right.” (Also, if you have the appropriately skewed sense of humor, I highly recommend Red Letter Media’s hilarious, poignant and definitely NSFW breakdowns on Star Wars Episodes 1 and 2, first chapter of which is below.)
