Scratch It – Assimilate’s Scratch Lab Is A Dailies Workflow Powerhouse
At last year’s NAB, I got a chance to check out Assimilate’s Scratch Lab, an innovative software tool that allows a DIT or video engineer to be able to create professional production dailies for review. It combines a fast review process, shot, timecode, and LUT metadata, audio sync and fast background rendering – all in one program. What’s also cool about Scratch Lab is that it is the only truly scalable dailies system designed to manage VFX projects by supporting XML, HTML and SQL, as well as compositing systems like The Foundry’s Nuke and Adobe After Effects. It also supports up to 5K resolutions, perfect for any RED EPIC production.
Assimilate has recently announced native support for the Sony F65 and 48-fps playback of stereo RED EPIC streams. So with high-end digital camera systems like the ARRI ALEXA, RED and Sony cameras now covered, Scratch Lab can provide native support for almost any codec you throw at it, including Canon DSLRs and GoPro cameras.
“Our clients demand robust, efficient and cost effective ways to create deliverables from every type of native camera media you can imagine,” said Ryan Sheridan, CTO of Otto Nemenz, Hollywood, CA. “SCRATCH Lab is the most versatile workflow tool we’ve seen. We’ve made a significant investment in Lab because it delivers fast color-corrected dailies deliverables for our customers, regardless of the cameras they’re shooting. And the price allows us to deliver a cost-effective package for any type of production.”
Scratch Lab is priced at $4,995 (yes, it will cost you some scratch) but if you’re a professional production using multiple cameras and formats, or a production that has many departments that need to review dailies, Scratch Lab is the best review tool out there.
