‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ Captures Audiences at Sundance
Although we would call BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD fantastical realism, it’s entirely from the very real point of view of the lead character Hushpuppy, a fiercely independent and resolute six year old. And if you can think back to when you were a kid and you were scared of that monster under your bed, you REALLY believed there was a monster under your bed, no? Well that’s Hushpuppy’s world – as adults we are simply peaking in and making judgments about it.
For Hushpuppy, (played by the non-actor and incredibly gifted Quvenzané Wallis) the end of the universe – in the shape of a southern Delta hurricane and brought on by her father’s sudden and unnamed illness – is actually coming.
